Weekly Update - Week of 1/29/2024

Good morning everyone, Hope you are all staying dry today; I can't remember such up-and-down weather in January! Here is your update for the coming week: -Students Singing Sunday Grades 2-4 families, do not forget that your students sing in the 10:30 am church service at Emanuel on Sunday! -Important Dates Link: emanueltigertalk.blogspot.com/2024/01/important-dates-week-of-1292024.html -School Health Update We have a strange stomach bug going around; I have first-hand knowledge of it since I have been home with two of my kids this week! Symptoms are simply complaining of stomach pain, followed by vomiting for about half a day, and no fever. If your child is not themselves and is complaining of stomach pain, keep an eye on them. We also continue to have cases of influenza and other respiratory illnesses. -FORWARD Work Day This is not for next week, but is one more plug for the renovation work day on Saturday, 1/27 starting at 8:00. We need able-bodied people to haul demolished mater

Coming This Weekend: Epiphany 4 - Jesus Appears as a Prophet with Authority

Image
Authority is the power to determine what happens, and the ability to give direction or even commands. Authority is limited. Authority is limited in duration. Parents have authority over their children until they grow up and move out. Authority is limited in scope. A governor has authority over the people of his state only, not the neighboring state. Authority is limited by levels. A manager has authority over employees unless the company owner—a higher authority—demotes him. Authority is limited in duration and scope. It is limited by higher levels of authority.  This week we see that there is one man—only one!—who has absolute authority. There is no one, not even the demons, who is outside his authority. As the Son of God, there is no higher authority than Jesus. And his authority is everlasting. But here is the best part of this epiphany: Jesus graciously uses his absolute authority for our benefit and blessing. Want to hear more? See you this weekend: Saturday at 5:15 p.m. • Sunday

Coming This Weekend: Epiphany 3 - Jesus Appears through the Ambassadors He Calls

Image
To whom does the work of salvation belong? Simple question. There is only one Savior. But this is how good Jesus is. So that our lives might have profound meaning and eternal purpose, he shares some of that work with us. He calls us not just to be followers, but to be follower-makers. Jesus asks some— prophets, apostles, pastors, missionaries, teachers—to do this full-time. But ultimately Jesus asks all believers to serve as his ambassadors, sharing the gospel with whomever he brings into our sphere of influence. This lofty charge requires commitment—a willingness to abandon everything else should faithfulness require it. This is the life-changing revelation for this week. Jesus has committed us to a lofty charge: the privilege to play a role in his saving work. Want to hear more? See you this weekend: Saturday at 5:15 p.m. • Sunday at 8 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. • Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Continue to monitor your children for flu-like symptoms. -End of the Quarter Friday marked the end of the 2nd quarter; we're halfway there! Image
Please pray for and encourage these called workers: Mrs. Abby Zuberbier, our Guided Studies Director accepted a Call to St. Croix Lutheran Academy in West Saint Paul, MN as their Learning Resource Center Director. Abby will remain at Emanuel through the end of the school year. We pray for an easy transition for Abby and her family this summer and the Lord’s blessings on her new ministry. Pastor Marcus Schulz returned a Divine Call to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Tomahawk, WI. We are delighted that Pastor Schulz will continue serving at Emanuel as Pastor of Outreach, and ask the Lord to continue blessing his ministry. Mr. William Fuerstenau returned a Divine Call to serve as principal at Nebraska Evangelical Lutheran High School. We are very pleased that Bill will continue as our principal, and Beth will remain in her current position as our third-grade teacher. We look forward to the continued blessings of the Lord on both of their ministries at Emanuel. Miss Ruth Gehring accepted her

Coming This Weekend: The Baptism of our Lord - Jesus Appears as Our Substitute

Image
At his baptism in the Jordan River Jesus was publicly anointed with the Holy Spirit and designated by God the Father as his chosen Messiah. Thus, Jesus’ baptism was the beginning of his public ministry. Jesus’ baptism revealed that he was not just a nice guy who could make a sturdy table. He was God’s chosen servant, the one who had come to bring salvation to the ends of the earth. Jesus is the one willing to stand in our place as our substitute and Savior. Jesus’ baptism reveals to us who he really is. Our own baptism does the same! Our baptism was the beginning of a new and better life—eternal life!—a gift graciously given to us by our truest friend. Jesus’ ministry and our eternity with him. It begins with baptism. Want to hear more? See you this weekend: Saturday at 5:15 p.m. • Sunday at 8 a.m. & 10:30 a.m. • Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Coming This Weekend: The Epiphany of our Lord - Jesus Appears as the Savior of All Nations

Image
Ever had an ‘epiphany?’ It’s a word we use to describe a bright idea. The word means to make a sudden appearance, and when we’ve discovered something particularly important, we’ve “had an epiphany.” Today, we look at the story of when Jesus made a striking appearance in the lives of some noteworthy gentiles: the famous “magi from the East.” Today, we enjoy the fact that Jesus has appeared for all people to know and worship.  With the new calendar year, we begin a new season of the church year, the Epiphany season. On each weekend from now until the beginning of Lent, we’ll see more and more of Jesus’ power and importance revealed. With the wise men, we’ll begin by searching for him, but in the weeks to come, his true light will dawn on us again and again. We’ll stand as witnesses to his baptism, we’ll marvel at his miracles and teaching, and finally, we’ll see him transfigured in all his glory as God’s Son.  Want to hear more? See you this weekend: Saturday at 5:15 p.m. • Sunday at 8 a

Coming This Weekend: Good News of Great Joy For All People

Image
On Christmas Eve the angel told the shepherds, “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10). One wonders if those words struck those Jewish shepherds as odd. For centuries, God had given special attention to one nation—Israel. There were Jewish religious leaders who taught that only members of that special people would be saved. Not according to the Christmas angel! The birth of the Savior was good news for all people.  Today we celebrate the Epiphany of our Lord. Epiphany comes from a Greek word meaning “reveal.” When the Savior was born, he was first revealed to Israelites: the shepherds, Simeon, and Anna. But today, the Lord miraculously guides foreigners across countless miles, so the Savior could be revealed to them as well. How did the magi respond? “They were overjoyed” (Matthew 2:10). Epiphany is sometimes known as “The Gentiles’ Christmas.” We Gentiles (non-Jews) rejoice in the good news that this Jewish baby is not just the Savior of Jews.
