Weekly Update - Week of 1/15/2024

Good afternoon everyone,

I pray you all made it through the snow unscathed and were able to dig yourselves out this morning!

Here is your update for the (hopefully!) full week ahead at Emanuel:

-Important Dates

-School Health

We definitely still have respiratory virus/influenza still circulating through the building, as is common this time of year. I expect it will increase during this coming week because it will likely be too cold for us to get any outside time. Continue to monitor your children for flu-like symptoms.

-End of the Quarter

Friday marked the end of the 2nd quarter; we're halfway there! Students who were not in school and/or are missing assignments have the next full week to complete work and turn it in to their teachers. Report cards will be released on the evening of January 21.

-Forensics (Grades 5-8)

Forensics is ready to begin! This is a great opportunity to practice public speaking, learn how to work as a team, and grow responsibility. The team is coached by Mrs. D, Miss Ladwig (retired Emanuel Teacher), and Mrs. Stern (retired teacher). The permission form return window has been extended to Monday, January 15th due to the snow day. Please be sure to return the form below by Monday so that practice schedules can be set up appropriately! We are so excited to begin!

-Electives (Grades 6-8)

As we begin the second semester after experimenting with a slate of electives for our 6th-8th graders, we are going to give our teachers a taste of the alternative before making a decision on whether to keep electives as a permanent feature at Emanuel. Electives are a great chance for staff to teach things that are not necessarily part of the regular curriculum, but they are an extra workload on our teachers as well. For the second semester, 6th-8th grade students will have a homeroom study period from 1:25-2:10 in place of the elective class (Student Council will still meet from 1:25-1:50). Our teaching staff will then convene at the beginning of the summer to decide if we are going to continue the elective program and, if so, plan the entire year's electives before the start of the 2024/2025 school year. Thank you for allowing us to take the time to implement this program the right way!

-Weather

Thank you for understanding this past week with the winter weather that finally showed up! This week, we have some bitterly cold days forecast. We will likely not be outside, for sure on Monday-Wednesday. If you drop off in the morning, remember that the doors do not open until 7:40; students should not be standing outside for an extended time as frostbite can occur very quickly with temperatures below zero.

-No Bus

Bus families, mark your calendars: NO BUS ON FRIDAY THIS WEEK.

Have a blessed rest of your weekend, and GO PACK GO!!

In Christ,
Bill Fuerstenau, Principal
